Welcome to the
Weimar Christmas Market
„O du fröhliche, o du selige ..." Which song will herald the start of advent more than that? This song was written by Johannes Daniel Falk and was sung the first time in the year 1816 at a Christmas Market Party by a choir of Falk’s orphanage in Weimar.Since then the song can be heard all over the world annually ...
Christmas in Weimar brings joy to the hearts
of young and old: theatre for the little ones,
classic tales by the town’s great poets,
Christmas decorations from the Erzgebirge
mountains, hand-blown glass art from
Lauscha and wooden and tin toys that make superb stocking fillers.
Four huge church
gates mark the entrances to the Christmas
market and commemorate the festival’s
Christian origins.
Enjoy the magical atmosphere at Christmas time around the beautifully decorated Weimar historical Market square, Schillerstrasse and Theaterplatz.
Organ music and carol
singing in the churches and market square
add to the festive charm of this UNESCO
World Heritage town.
Enjoy a glass of hot mulled wine, Christmas cookies and the famous Thuringian grilled sausages ...
Another highlight will be a romantic ice skating rink, surrounded with historic buildings at the Platz der Demokratie. For refreshments or Glühwein an Austrian Hüttenzauber Village will cater scaters and spectators up to the late hours of the night.
Discover Weimar
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller, Johann Sebastian Bach and Franz Liszt, Lucas Cranach and the Weimar School have all made their mark in Weimar.
In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Weimar played an important role as an intellectual centre. The town's awareness of its history, both recent and more distant, has enabled it to realise its vision of a state-of-the-art cultural centre. As Goethe once asked, "Where else do you find so many good things in such a small place?"
The artistic and cultural importance of Weimar's historical architecture and landscape parks, as well as the town's role as an intellectual centre in the late 18th century, were the reasons for its designation as the "Classical Weimar" UNESCO World Heritage site.
A second UNESCO World Heritage site, " Bauhaus sites in Dessau und Weimar", was designated because of the foundation here of the Bauhaus School by Professor Walter Gropius, who had a profound influence on 20th century architecture.
Weimar is surrounded by remarkable landscape parks, with the park on the River Ilm right in the centre of town.
The carefully tended parks and gardens are closely associated with different eras in the town's history and reflect their founders' philosophies.
